During: The Kitchen and Dining Room

It’s #demoday Chip and Joanna fans! Which means we’re removing the doors on doors on the left side of the kitchen. Goodbye water heater, washer and dryer closet, and pantry. Hello to more countertop and cabinet space.

When the left side of the kitchen was removed, here’s what the space looked like. Progress between demolition and drywall is shown below.

Reminder from my first post on the kitchen, the current pantry is going away altogether to make room for a larger hall pathway leading from the kitchen and dining to the living and hall bathroom.

Update: After reviewing matching options for the current backsplash and countertops, I found that the matches were not close enough for my tastes. So, I ended up tacking on an extra $2,000 to my budget to be able to do all new countertops and backsplash.

I opted for a classic porcelain marble look for the backsplash and deep gray countertops. Porcelain is a great option for backsplash, as it is budget-friendly and stain- and impact-resistant. I love black countertops but felt it would get too matchy matchy with the black kitchen hardware, black doors leading into the sunroom and black banquette bench in the dining space. I also love white countertops but felt the space would begin to feel too washed out with light wood floors, white cabinets and white walls. Check out photos of the backsplash and countertops samples below.
