During: Stairway and Living Room

What a difference opening up walls makes! Natural light now pours from the living room windows on the southeast side of the house into the hallway area that was originally a dark maze.

My last post shows how the walls were structured through the hallway between the back of the living room and the bathroom. It was dark, uninviting and an eye sore. The cost of structural work, which can run $3,000-10,000 depending on the beams and footers you’re needing to put in, is well worth it to make the home more light, airy and functional.

Throughout the hallway, there were also a variety of ceiling textures — smooth, swirl and popcorn. There was even a large, no-longer-functional air grate that was rusting and needed to be removed. Case and point below.

We also made sure to preserve the historic nuances of the house. We kept the 1940s baseboards the 4-inch height throughout the home and moved the telephone nook (original to the home) from a hallway wall that was taken out during demolition. We put the telephone nook in another hallway wall — as it was custom for the nook to be in the hallway.
